Any Advice?

There are many of our classmates who have never been on a cruise.  Do you have any advice that we can post on this site to help them prepare?  Email Kim with your advice:  paytonjsplace@aol.com

Travel Details

As information, or recommendations, become available regarding travel information to get to the cruise, we will add it to this page.

A big priority -- PASSPORTS!  Please don't forget that you need a passport to go on this cruise.  For those of you who don't already have one, we are including a link to find out more information about the new passport card.  It would be advisable for you to consider getting the passport ASAP -- to ensure you have it in hand by the time of the cruise.

NOTE:  Kim ordered a passport card -- because it was published that they would begin production in "Spring".  Information was just released that production will not begin until June/July.  It would not be advised that you request the passport card -- because now Kim will be getting a book AND a card!

The U.S. State Department has changed the policy -- they will not enforce the new rule until June 2009.  So, we do NOT need passports for this cruise.  You will only need a certified copy of a birth certificate and a state issued license or ID card.

Hotels & Shuttle Info from Airport

For those of you arriving a night or two before the cruise, we wanted to provide you with a few recommendations for hotels in Cocoa Beach -- keep in mind, we have not stayed at these hotels...we are basing our recommendation on the reviews provided on the internet.

There's an overall Port Canaveral site that we have found helpful.  Click here to check it out.

Four Points Sheraton - Cocoa Beach  - As of 2/1/2008, rates on the hotels websites run from $90 (for a room with 2 queen beds) to $135 for a suite.  These rates are subject to change. This hotel was highly rated by people who have stayed there previously.

Here's the overview provided on their website:

Hot Spot. Located in world famous Cocoa Beach, the Four Points by Sheraton Cocoa Beach hotel is minutes away from Orlando International Airport, Kennedy Space Center, Port Canaveral cruise and gaming ships. Need more? We’re only steps from the widest beach in Florida.

Think You’ve Seen Everything? Welcome to the World’s Largest Surf Complex (TM) with beach rentals, surfing lessons, a surf travel agency, and shopping all under one roof. Relax in the casual Shark Pit Bar & Grill, with a 5,600-gallon shark & exotic fish aquarium and 40-foot water wall.

We’ve Got it Covered. With free High Speed Internet Access, Wi-Fi throughout the complex, a fitness room, business center, and meeting rooms, we have it all. Breathe in that fresh ocean air outside and fresh air inside too. For the comfort of all of our guests we are 100% non-smoking.

If you book at this hotel, be sure to ask about a shuttle to the cruise on July 24th!

LaQuinta Inn Cocoa Beach - As of 2/1/2008, rates for this hotel start at $70 a night.

Information about this hotel as shared on their website:

The 7 Original Astronauts, former owners of La Quinta Inn Cocoa Beach, left the place in out-of-this-world condition. Now, along with our courteous service and 100 percent satisfaction guarantee, we will make your stay more earthly. All rooms feature loads of amenities, including free high-speed Internet access, a micro-fridge, and coffee maker. We serve a complimentary Deluxe Continental Breakfast daily. USA Today and the local newspaper are available in our spacious lobby. Enjoy the heated outdoor Swimming Pool; try your skill at Shuffleboard. Guests may also use a nearby 21,000 square foot health and fitness center.

Shuttles from the Orlando airport range in price -- but are around $20 per person.  Here are a few shuttle sites:

What should you do in Nassau???  Shore Excursions

Here's an LA Times Article with information for you first time cruisers...about things such as tipping, drinks, excursion, etc.

Kim's advice on what to expect on the cruise:
I've never cruised before...and I'm also an obsessive researcher.  Hey, I like to know what I'm getting myself into.  So, I am going to take some time over the next few weeks to research message boards to find out what we might want to know before we get on the ship.  Here's what I've found so far:

  • Most cabins only have one plug -- so bringing a power strip with you is a good idea (for things like charging cell phones, etc.)
  • Bring a few ziploc-type storage bags with you -- to put your wet clothes in at the end of the cruise.
  • Bring a blow dryer -- I'm finding that most people say they are NOT provided on the Sensation
  • Typically the 3rd night on the cruise is the "formal night" for dinner
  • Smoking -- there are designated areas of the ship that permit smoking
  • Upon embarking, speak with the purser's office regarding your flight on the 27th -- to ensure you are given an appropriate disembarking time to enable you to get to the airport to make your flight
  • Bar Menu
